Dev Deepawali 2024: Preparations begin for lighting 2.1 million earthen lamps across 84 ghats
District administration and Ganga Seva Nidhi have commenced grand preparations for the upcoming Dev Deepawali, aiming to illuminate all 84 ghats with over 21 lakh diyas.
With Dev Deepawali just weeks away, the holy city of Varanasi has started buzzing with spiritual anticipation. The district administration, in collaboration with various religious bodies, Ganga Seva Nidhi, and local voluntary organizations, has chalked out a meticulous blueprint to illuminate all 84 ghats—from Assi to Rajghat—with a staggering 2.1 million earthen lamps (diyas).
Divisional Commissioner and District Magistrate held a high-level review meeting at the Circuit House, directing officials to ensure foolproof safety arrangements, barricading along the riverbanks, and seamless traffic diversions around Godowlia, Chowkaghat, and Rath Yatra. Special emphasis is being laid on eco-friendly celebrations, with cow-dung diyas and mustard oil being promoted extensively among local youth groups and volunteers.
In addition to the traditional ghat illuminations, the famous 'Mega Laser Show' highlighting the mythological significance of Kashi and Lord Shiva's victory over Tripurasura will be projected onto the banks of the Ganges. Tourism department officials confirmed that foreign tourist bookings and river cruise reservations have already hit 100 percent capacity for the festival night, promising a spectacular global spectacle.
