IMS-BHU Introduces Advanced Robotic Surgery Facility to Cut Wait Times for Critical Oncology Patients
In a major boost to healthcare infrastructure in Purvanchal, the Institute of Medical Sciences at Banaras Hindu University has operationalized a state-of-the-art robotic surgical system. The new technology aims to reduce post-operative recovery periods for cancer patients.
Healthcare delivery in eastern Uttar Pradesh took a monumental leap forward as the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU), Varanasi, formally inaugurated its advanced robotic surgery unit. Funded under national health initiatives, the installation of the fourth-generation robotic system will allow surgeons to perform complex gastrointestinal, urological, and gynecological oncology procedures with sub-millimeter precision. Hospital Director Prof. S.N. Sankhwar stated that the initiative is designed to drastically lower intensive care unit stays and minimize surgical complications for economically vulnerable patients who travel from as far as Bihar and Jharkhand.
“With this robotic suite, our surgical oncologists can access narrow anatomical spaces with unmatched dexterity,” said Prof. Sankhwar during the launch ceremony at the Sir Sunderlal Hospital complex. The facility has already begun conducting trial runs, successfully executing complex resections for colorectal malignancies. Local health authorities have noted that the integration of this equipment aligns with the Yogi Adityanath government's broader vision of decentralizing super-specialty healthcare, ensuring that residents of Purvanchal do not need to rush to Delhi or Mumbai for critical interventions.
To ensure seamless operation, a dedicated team of biomedical engineers, scrub nurses, and senior consultants underwent rigorous training modules certified by global manufacturers. The hospital administration confirmed that procedures performed utilizing the robotic setup will be integrated under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), ensuring cashless access for eligible families. This development marks a milestone for BHU, reinforcing its position as the premier medical hub of the Gangetic plains.
