Traditional Dangal Held at Tulsi Manas Temple Ground on Nag Panchami, Preserving Ancient Kashi Akhara Culture
Wrestlers from across Purvanchal gathered at the historic Tulsi Manas Temple grounds to participate in the traditional Nag Panchami Kushti competition, keeping centuries of local wrestling heritage alive.
Reviving the glorious traditions of Kashi's age-old akharas, a high-intensity traditional wrestling tournament (Dangal) was organized at the Tulsi Manas Temple ground on the occasion of Nag Panchami. Pehelwans from Varanasi, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, and Bihar squared off in mud pits before a cheering crowd of thousands of local enthusiasts who lined up around the arena since early morning.
The event, deeply rooted in Varanasi's physical culture, was inaugurated by local dignitaries and veteran wrestlers. Akharas such as Tulsi Akhara and Bhadaini Akhara have historically nurtured champions who carried the name of Kashi to national platforms. Senior officials emphasized that preserving these traditional wrestling bouts is crucial for keeping the youth engaged in physical fitness and away from urban vices.
Spectators enjoyed thrilling bouts that lasted several minutes, with winners awarded traditional prizes including silver 'gadas' (maces), turbans, and cash rewards sponsored by local trade associations. The event concluded with traditional prayers for the health, prosperity, and sporting prowess of the youth of Uttar Pradesh.
